The Process
Inspiration and Design
The art journey begins with an exploration of the vibrant streets of Marrakech. Drawing inspiration from my photos, I immerse myself in the city's essence, observing the interplay of light and shadow and the rich palette of the city walls. These observations are transformed into simplified designs, each capturing a unique aspect of Marrakech's charm.
Creating the Screnprint Monoprints
With the designs in hand, the monoprinting process begins. Using a blend of inks and textures, each monoprint is crafted to capture the spontaneous beauty of Marrakech. The ink is applied through a screen and then transferred to high-quality paper, resulting in one-of-a-kind prints that serve as the foundational layers of the final pieces.
Collaging the Layers
The true artistry of the collection emerges through its layers. Each screenprinted detail is meticulously cut and assembled to form a collage that reflects the layered history and textures of Marrakech. The pieces are hand-glued together, ensuring that each layer aligns perfectly, creating a cohesive and three-dimensional effect.
Marrakech Medina
In Marrakech, the prosaic turns ethereal. The narrow alleys form a labyrinth that enchants and confuses the senses. As we wander through, we get lost, found, and lost again. The light and shadows bounce off the fortress walls, creating a dance of brightness and darkness. We see slivers of sky, but mostly we see walls. These walls have lived and witnessed generations of passersby. Their hues—all shades of pinkish reds and rose ochres—blend together in layered and deep tones.
